Good Morning Dancers, Dreamers, & Busy People,
Everyone is always so happy on Fridays! It is good to dance when one is happy:)
I will see my Friday dancers this morning at 9AM and at 4:30 this afternoon.
Please remember to check your dance bag for all necessary items such as dance shoes, tights and leotards. Many dancers are very surprised to arrive at the Studio without the things they need. While ABT does have a collection of donated and/or lost shoes for ballet and tap, it does take time to find a pair that might fit well enough to actually dance in; and, these shoes will never be quite as good, or comfy, as your very own shoes. :)
Do yourself a favor by preparing at home. Take a minute to go through your checklist in advance to save yourself a hassle later on in the day. It is a good thing, a wise thing, and an easy thing. You can do it.
Be prepared for the activities in your day. I highly recommend it.
I will see you later, prepared, and ready for an intense dance work out with me at ABT.
I am looking forward to it, and I am planning ahead:)
Miss Cecily Thinking of You
Helpful Hint: Preparing your dance bag for class is a good introduction to preparing your dance bag for rehearsals and performances. In fact, it could help you to review Miss Cecily's Dancer's Guide section called "How to Prepare Your Special Dance Bag for Performances and Rehearsals."
Here is the Guide for your comfort and convenience (;-)
How to Prepare Your Special Dance Bag for Performances and Rehearsals
Dance Performances can be magical when attitudes are properly nurtured...
What should you be doing at home to prepare yourself (or your child)? Here are some initial suggestions some more practical, all psychologically significant.
Start preparing a Special Bag to take to the theatre with you every time. It should include hair accessories among them - brush, comb, hair elastics, bobby pins, hair pins, clips and hairnets. Also, spray, mousse, gel or the like - products to slick the hair back and otherwise hold it in shape. Our handy dandy Hair Kits are available now in the ABT Lobby And will be for sale at the theatre for your convenience.
In terms of clothing, you should have at least two sets of pink tights and appropriate leotards. A perfect pair to wear AND your back-up pair in case of unexpected events such as a snag, hole or run, and/or dirt or smudges. Apply this formula of having a back-up to every item you will be appearing in (example - jazz pants). A dancer's motto can be borrowed from the Scouts - "Be Prepared". Dancers tend to carry around everything but the kitchen sink!
Foot wear for Performances must be first rate.
Your old practice shoes are more than fine for Rehearsals.
For the performances, everything should be fresh, clean and "like NEW". If needed, some time before the performance is the precise time to buy new, clean shoes so that your dancer may "break them in" properly - just the right amount - not too much, not too little, just right. As you know, I am fond of quoting Goldilocks and the Three Bears when it comes to many things in the Wonderful World of Ballet which is Very Specific, Not This Way, NOT That Way, Just Right.
Other popular dance bag items include - BandAids and antiseptic ointments, bandages and tape, nail clippers & the like, toiletries including tissues and a hand towel.
Which leads us to the most fun items of all (for many!)
~~ Make-Up!~~
The Stevie Eller Theatre is a relatively small, intimate venue with a HUGE STAGE. MAKE-UP is NOT Needed. I suggest for the youngest dancers with their beautiful glowing skin - simple blush, a pretty pink or peachy lipstick (not red), mascara and some subtle eye shadow. Experts at Stage Make-up work with shadow and light to produce desired effects. Since no character make-ups are needed, I prefer to keep things simple and elegant. Having said that, for the make-up mavens (and I was once one!), the time to test your make-up is the Dress Rehearsal.
Of course, a few personal items such as a beloved, small stuffed animal, a book, an iPod or even a knitting project to keep nervous fingers busy are often found in A Dancer's Bag.
For the Theatre and the Performances, Making the Experience Special is what it is all about! Taking time in advance to prepare is the nature of the proverbial beast. Meticulous preparations which lead to Theatre Magic comprises my personal plan, and hopefully yours.
I hope you enjoy this delightful process as much as I do. That wish and this guide are my gifts to you.
